Professor Cui Xiaohui explained "big data" for social researchers of Wuhan University

      In the April 3rd afternoon,Prof. Cui Xiaohui, dean of International School of Software, delivered a lecture entitled "Humanities and Social research in the background of big data”in the Auditorium of administration building. Lecture was held by the Academy of Humanities and Social Science of Wuhan University, aiming to improve awareness of arts teachers of the importance of big data, and create academic atmosphere of learning to use related technologies and methods of big data.Hundreds of scholars of each arts faculties,and research institutions attended the report.
      In the report,Professor Cui Xiaohui described the force and characteristics of big data,and focused on the relationship between social sciences and big data, lists a series of examples.He said that in the era of big data which data counts, there is a big change in strategic needs undergoing: focus falls on the data (information). He emphasized that the role of big data locates at reflecting values,not just knowledge discovery.The 4V features of big data is: Volume,Variety,Value,Velocity. The data characteristics of big data are multiple heterogeneous high noise, high noise, open and easy to obtain, interactivity and timeliness.
      Prof. Cui Xiaohui thought the difficult of big data research is that the traditional storage structures need to upgrade to extensible storage architecture, or they can hardly adapt to the existing big data storage.At the same time, after support for distributed file systems, it needs real-time streaming handling.Without speed,no matter how valuable the data is,it is only a bunch of money that can not flow.But due to the limit of analysis methods, the insufficient amount of samples and the reality that we cannot take full advantage of all the data, the integrity of the information was undermined potentially.As another example,limited by analysis capacity so that we cannot get the answers of complex problems, limited in time so that we have to use an simple modeling technology, and also because there is not enough time to perform multiple iterations, we have to make compromise on the purity of the model.Professor Cui Xiaohui described the demonstration application of big data,include "disease forecasting based on big data of social media", "Migration prediction based on high-performance computing and big data analysis" and "Comprehensive warning technology major group events based on the big data".
